Dental Anxiety is Common
For some people, visiting the dentist can be a stressful experience. It is estimated that 35 million adults experience anxiety at the thought of an upcoming dental visit and end up postponing their appointment. At Ersland Family Dental, we want to assure you that we understand this anxiety and aspire to be the Anchorage dentist that strives to make your dental visit as pleasant as possible.
Tell your dentist and the dental staff if you feel fearful, tense or anxious. Bringing your fears out into the open can help us tailor the treatment and pace to suit your needs.
Try to schedule your dental visit for a time when you won't be rushed or physically strained. You may find an early appointment less stressful than rushing to see us directly after work.
Get a good night's sleep the night before and eat light meals the day of your appointment.
Wear loose, comfortable clothes to your dental appointment. Avoid wearing tight collars or clothes that will restrict your movement.
Arrange a signal ahead of time, such as raising your hand, to indicate you are feeling discomfort or need a break from a procedure.
Bring a music player and headset and listen to music you enjoy. Try visualization--focusing on a relaxing scene from a favorite vacation spot and holding it before your "mind's eye" during treatment.
Talk with us about medications that are available to help create more relaxed, comfortable dental visits. The type of procedure, your overall health, history of allergies and your anxiety level are considered when determining witch approach is best for your particular case.

Advantages of Sedation Dentistry
IV Sedation allows patients to relax and minimize anxiety before their visit. You won't be referred to another dentist or office, as our IV sedation is performed in office by Dr Ersland for restorations or surgical procedures. IV sedation allows more work to be done in a short time, so you can comfortably get through single or multiple procedures in one day.
Oral sedation is safe. It requires no injections and carries no risk of over-medication.
Oral sedation allows patients to comfortably receive treatment. You will not feel groggy or nauseous after treatment, though you will need a companion to take you to and from the appointment.
Our dentists can administer extensive treatments in just one visit. Sedation dentistry is the perfect solution for patients who have avoided the dentist for years and need a full course of general, restorative, or cosmetic dentistry treatments that might normally require several visits.
